Department Research Seminar?October 25, 2018Gwynn Elfring Headshot  from UBC Mechanical Engineering  (2018/10/23 7:48)
Elastic Symmetry Breaking, Locomotion and Synchronization at low Reynolds Number Dr. Gwynn J. Elfring Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering University of British Columbia When: October 25, 2018 | 1 PM Where: CEME 2202 | 6250 Applied Science Lane Snacks and beverages to be provided Abstract: At low Reynolds number, locomotion is only possible through non-reciprocal body deformations and so propulsion techniques such as flapping a rigid appendage do not lead to net motion. When flexibility is introduced, fluid structure interaction and deformation acts as a natural symmetry-breaking mechanism that can yield net motion, even with reciprocal actuation. In this talk we discuss a few problems in locomotion and synchronization at low Reynolds numbers where flexibility and deformation play a key role in the dynamics of the system. Biography: Gwynn Elfring is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Institute of Ap ...
Media Mention: Global National Features UBC Ultrasound Breakthrough [video]  from UBC Mechanical Engineering  (2018/10/18 6:29)
Watch a video by Global National to learn more about about Carlos D. Gerardo, Edmond Cretu and MECH professor Robert Rohling’s breakthrough in ultrasound technology: The Innovators: UBC researchers behind new ultrasound advancement
Breakthrough Revolutionizes Ultrasound using Mechanical Engineering, Microfabrication and Novel Prin  from UBC Mechanical Engineering  (2018/10/18 1:44)
Photo by Clare Kiernan At first glance, Carlos D. Gerardo, Edmond Cretu and Robert Rohling?s new polymer capacitive micro-machined ultrasound transducer (polyCMUT) looks like a computer chip, but it?s actually a series of microscopic drums built with a novel printing process. This innovation uses mechatronics and micromachining to convert sound into electrical signals at a fraction of the price of the industry-standard piezoelectric crystal technology. The same technology used in a record player, piezoelectric ultrasound transducers depend on crystals that create a charge when they are squeezed, or change shape when a charge is passed through them. This is how they can convert the mechanical energy of sound waves into electrical signals. The drawback is that the crystal transducers are fragile, expensive and labour-intensive to produce ? crystals are cut and arranged by hand, ?like jewelry,? explains Dr. Robert Rohling , a Professor of both Mechanical Engineering and Electr ...
