Amir Maleki Zamenjani wins the 2017/2018 Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award

MECH Ph.D. candidate Amir Maleki Zamenjani received the Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award for the 2017/2018 school year at the end of April. He is one of sixteen graduate students at UBC to be selected, and one of three recipients in the Faculty of Applied Science.
This award is given to graduate teaching assistants who act as role models, work collegially with students, faculty, and colleagues, and demonstrate a broad knowledge of the field and an ability to help students actively learn.
Amir also completed the Certificate Program in Advanced Teaching & Learning through the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology

CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC CGS Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements ? Spring 2018 Competition
The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement (CGS-MSFSS) Program supports high-calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions abroad. By accessing international scientific research and training, CGS-MSFSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian and foreign institutions.
Applicant eligibility : Open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who hold a Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) at the Master’s or doctoral level or a Vanier CGS. Please note that international students who hold a Vanier CGS are not eligible for this award.
Award value : Up to CAD $6,000 for two to six months
Applicant deadline : 4:00pm on Friday, 11 May 2018

The spring MECH 2 Competition took place on Wednesday, April 18, with 20 teams of second-year mechanical engineering students competing in a SpaceX design challenge. Teams designed remote-controlled landing pads that could be used to transport a rocket booster back to shore.
The competition took place in a 60-foot pool, with teams competing head to head.
Their efforts were recorded by several media outlets, including Xinhuanet , and Breakfast Television (segment starts at the 2:25 mark).

Design&Innovation Day 2018: Congratulations to Our Fourth Year Students on Their Capstone ProjectsIM

On April 5, the Faculty of Applied Science hosted its annual Design and Innovation Day where fourth-year students from all departments could showcase their capstone design projects.
MECH students displayed their projects in the Engineering Design Centre, and were judged on their projects by industry members, faculty, and their peers.
At the end of the day, MECH recognized the many industry partners who supported the capstone design projects, and awarded several internal awards decided by the 4th year students, including “greenest project,” “scariest project,” among others.
Congratulations to all of our fourth year students for their hard work! Photos of some of the projects are included below.

Join us for the final MECH 2 Competition of the 2017/2018 school year!
In teams of 6-7, second year MECH students are creating remote-controlled ships to perform certain functions of the autonomous landing platforms used by SpaceX. Their vessels will have to move quickly, maneuver around obstacles, keep position (to receive rocket booster), and maintain stability in waves, while transporting rocket booster models.
Competition schedule:

9:30 – 11 am – Poster presentations ( EDC 102)
11 am – 2 pm – Competition ( KAIS 1180)
Student teams only have about 2 weeks to complete their designs. Want to see how their designs do? Come watch the 20 teams compete!

Professor Emeritus Mel Gordon Dies at 71

Melvin Gordon, a multifaceted theater scholar who was a world expert in Stanislavsky and acting theory, died on March 22 in Richmond, Calif., due to complications of renal failure. He was 71.
Gordon spent much of his career at the University of California, Berkeley?s department of theater, dance, and performance studies (formerly the department of dramatic art) at UC Berkeley as a faculty member from 1990-2015.
While at Berkeley, the inquisitive and light-hearted Gordon was known for lively and provocative undergraduate teaching, which included theater history, playwriting, acting, and a very popular course on bad acting. He also taught about less-studied theater traditions in circus and Yiddish theater.
Gordon?s wide range of publications included books and articles on Commedia dell’arte (Lazzi); Yiddish theater; the Grand Guignol (1988/1997); and a number of more or less sensational aspects of German popular and political culture of the 1920s and 1930s: ?Voluptuous Panic ...

UBC graduate programs are invited to submit nominations for the CGS/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award in the fields of (i) Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Engineering and (ii) Social Sciences.
Please note that this award is very competitive – PhD dissertations from universities across North America are forwarded to this competition. MECH will only forward nominations that are competitive with those from top PhDs throughout North America.
