Google PhD Fellowships support graduate students as they pursue their PhD in computer science, related disciplines, or promising research areas. The fellowship provides tuition, fees and a stipend for two years, with possible extension for a third year. Recipients are also matched with a Google Research Mentor.

The IODE War Memorial Scholarships support PhD scholars whose research makes important contributions to Canada and the world. Up to three scholarships of $20,000 for study in Canada or for study within the Commonwealth will be awarded for the 2019-2020 academic year. Applicants are judged on academic attainments and promise as well as personal character and career goals.
Eligibility : Applicants must be Canadian citizens, hold a first degree from a Canadian university, and be enrolled in at least the second year of their doctoral program.
Deadlines :
Letter of Intent by 01 October 2018
Complete application by 15 November 2018

Thomas Oxland , PEng, a professor in UBC’s Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Orthopaedics and co-director of the UBC Orthopaedic and Injury Biomechanics Group, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), Canada?s highest honour for artists, scholars and scientists.
Recognized by the RSC for his ?seminal research work? in the field of musculoskeletal diseases and injuries, Oxland has played an instrumental role in advancing orthopaedic engineering at UBC and Vancouver General Hospital over the past two decades. In addition to serving as founding director of UBC and VGH’s former Division of Orthopaedic Engineering Research, which operated from 1997 to 2009, he was heavily involved in the establishment of both the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility and the International Collaboration for Repair Discoveries (ICORD) research centre, where he is a principal investigator and associate director of preclinical discovery research.

Engineers at the University of British Columbia have developed a new ultrasound transducer, or probe, that could dramatically lower the cost of ultrasound scanners to as little as $100. Their patent-pending innovation?no bigger than a Band-Aid?is portable, wearable and can be powered by a smartphone.
Conventional ultrasound scanners use piezoelectric crystals to create images of the inside of the body and send them to a computer to create sonograms. Researchers replaced the piezoelectric crystals with tiny vibrating drums made of polymer resin, called polyCMUTs (polymer capacitive micro-machined ultrasound transducers), which are cheaper to manufacture.

UBC Affiliated Fellowships :
The UBC Affiliated Fellowships doctoral competition runs in concert with the university-adjudicated NSERC and SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) Doctoral competitions. Students who submit an NSERC or SSHRC application to their graduate program are eligible for open Affiliated Fellowships and do not need to submit a separate Affiliated Fellowships application. (To be considered for criteria-based affiliated fellowship(s), students should submit this checklist ( https://www.grad.ubc.ca/sites/default/files/awards/awards_affiliated_criteria-based_2018-08-16.docx ) with their NSERC or SSHRC application to their graduate program.) Those applying only for Vanier CGS or CIHR Doctoral Research Award must submit a separate and complete Affiliated Fellowships application in order to be considered.

Applicants applying through UBC will either be:
currently registered at (or were registered at during the year of application), or are on an approved leave of absence from, a degree program at UBC
not currently registered at UBC; or are registered, but not in a degree program; and have completed all of the requirements for a degree program from UBC since 1 January 2018
