The fourth annual IEEE Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (IEEE CASE 2008), sponsored by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, will be held from August 23 to 26, 2008 in Washington DC, U.S.A. The conference goal is the broad coverage and dissemination of foundational research on automation among researchers, academicians, and industry practitioners. The focus is on scientific methods for automated machines and systems operating in structured environments over long periods, and also on the explicit structuring of environments. The deadline for submissions is 1 February, 2008.
The ICRA 2008 Robot Challenge  from IEEE-RAS news  (2007/9/18 8:00)
A new robot event is being introduced at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, starting at ICRA 2008. The event will consist of a number of specific challenges with the overall theme of "space robotics". Our goal is to make this competition accessible to all members of the ICRA community, to integrate it tightly with the technical aspects of the conference, and to encourage as many participants as possible to bring their robots and compete. We are currently working on finalizing the rules and the structure of the events, and are looking for input from the community. If you would like to contribute your opinions and experience to the discussion, please join the discussion mailing list . As the details of the Challenge solidify, they will be posted on the web site. To be informed of new developments, please join the the announcement mailing list .For more information, contact the Challenge Chairs Challenge ChairsBill Smart Department of Computer Science and Eng ...
IEEE Election Ballots in the Mail  from IEEE-RAS news  (2007/8/29 8:00)
RAS voting members are eligible to participate annually in election of officers that serve on the top-tier IEEE governing bodies. These include the IEEE President-Elect, and Technical Activities Board (TAB) and Regional Activities Board (RAB) Directors. TAB oversees the publicatons, conferences, finances, and other technical activities of the IEEE and its Technical Councils and Societies while RAB oversees the the activities of the IEEE regional and sectional activities. Of particular interest this year to RAS members is the election of the Division X Delegate Elect/ Director Elect/ RAS members and members of the other societies in Division X will elect a new the Division X Director-Elect/Delegate Elect, who will succeed William Gruver, the current Division X Director. Candidates for Division X Director are RAS President Richard Volz [L]), and Oceanic Engineering Society Past President Thomas Wiener [R].Members of IEEE Regions 7 (Canada), 8 (Europe, Middle East, ...
4th IEEE-RAS/IFRR School of Robotics Science on Learning  from IEEE-RAS news  (2007/7/8 8:00)
Applications are now open Deadline for application is July, 20 2007 BACKGROUND The development of robust and intelligent service robots requires very advancedcapabilities, especially from a cognitive point of view. Even in simpleapplications, a service robot needs to understand complex and dynamicsituations, for which no pre-programmed function can be fully satisfactory. Thus a robot must continuously adapt to its changing world and develop ways toaddress, and possibly carry out, instances of problems for which it has notbeen instructed in advance. For these reasons, learning new skills, newsettings and new ways to carry out a given task is one of the prerequisite offuture service robots. GOALS The 4th IEEE-RAS/IFRR school, also open to participants from industry, aims atexploring various learning paradigms and their applications in robotics systemsand, in particular, will pursue the ambitious objective of comparing theirperformance in a given situation. PROGR ...
ICRA 2007 Proceedings Now on Xplore  from IEEE-RAS news  (2007/6/20 8:00)
The scientific material of ICRA'07 (787 regular papers and 20 short papers, for a total of 807) is on line in IEEE Xplore at the address http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/tocresult.jsp?isnumber=4209049&isYear=2007. The OPAC link is http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/servlet/opac?punumber=4209048. Note: Due to internal delays, IEEE has not yet linked the accompanying multimedia material (146 video clips and 20 long videos, for a total of 166) to the associated papers. We are in contact with the technical staff at IEEE Xplore, pushing for the completion of this final task. Please, stay tuned. ICRA 2007 was held in the heart of Rome, with ICRA'07 hosted in two venerable universities. The Conference and Exhibits were held at the Angelicum University.Largo Angelicum, 1, on the border of the Quirinale hill, overlooking the Roman Forum. The Tutorials and Workshops were held at the School of Engineering, University of Roma "La Sapienza", close to the Colosseum and next to the church of San Pietr ...

RAS WIKI is up and running!  from IEEE-RAS news  (2007/3/12 8:00)
The new RAS Webpage now has its own WIKI, which already contains news of employment and research oppportunities, BoF groups meeting in Rome, at ICRA2007, workshops, tutorials, special sessions and other events at ICRA, and information about an Open Source Grand Challenge. The RAS WIKI is open to the public to view, but only registered RAS members may post. If you have not already registered on the new webpage, send your name and IEEE number to the RAS Administrator, who will register you and send you login information. Please note: This is DIFFERENT from the login info for the IEEE webpage. The RAS WIKI has been developed as a joint effort of the RAS Electronic Products and Services Board (Stefano Stramigioli, chair) and the Student Activities Board (Surya Singh) with the assistance of our invaluable web designer, Olaf van Zandwijk. They will all be at ICRA and welcome your suggestions. DEFINITIONS (for those who are neither Gen X, Gen Y or the Millennial Generation)WIKI: "The simples ...
