Caitlin Marshall directs Kid-Simple as an exploration of sound

Berkeley audiences are asked to question their perceptions and attitudes about sound, disability and access, with the opening of Kid-Simple: a radio play in the flesh by Jordan Harrison. TDPS Ph.D. Candidate Caitlin Marshall directs the production, running November 15-24 in Durham Studio Theater.
This comedic fantasy tells the story of Moll, a teenager who invents a machine that hears sounds that cannot be heard. When her machine, ?The Third Ear,? is stolen, she sets out on a quest with ?the last virgin boy in the 11 th grade? to reclaim it and save all noise on earth, crossing a wilderness of sound and temptation in the process.

TDPS Dance Lecturer Amara Tabor Smith wins Best of the Bay award

Congratulations to Amara Tabor Smith, who won “Best Dance Séance” from the San Francisco Bay Guardian for her work He Moved Swiftly But Gently Down the Not Too Crowded Street: Ed Mock and Other True Tales in a City That Once Was , performed this past June. The tribute to the improvisational dance groundbreaker incorporated 11 different sites across San Francisco and set in movement different stages of Mock’s life as a gay black man until his death from AIDS in the 1980s. The 5-hour work was well-reviewed by critics across the city.
Amara teaches Intermediate Modern Dance Technique here at TDPS (when she’s not winning choreography awards). We’re very proud and lucky to have Amara in our midst!

TDPS opens 2013-14 season with A Midsummer Night?s Dream

TDPS opens its 2013-2014 season with one of Shakespeare?s most magical and endearing comedies in honor of the Bard?s upcoming 450 th birthday. Christine Nicholson will direct the story of the four young lovers crossing paths in an enchanted forest, setting the production during the 1960s. ?I thought the tension of the time fit the tension of the play,? says Nicholson. ?We see how far people will go in the pursuit of love; we see the lengths that authority will go to keep the status quo. We see the effects of desire and the pursuit of power.?
The colorful production will feature a cast of thirty student actors. ?I love working with large casts,? says Nicholson. ?There is an energy you don?t find in smaller groups. And with a large cast we can more fully create the world of the play, and many more actors can have a part in that world. The UC actors are always so incredibly engaged, committed, enthusiastic, and an absolute joy.?

Fraunhofer-Institut für Verkehrs- und Infrastruktursysteme IVI in Dresden künftig eigenständig

Das Fraunhofer-Institut für Verkehrs- und Infrastruktursysteme IVI in Dresden wird zum 1. Januar 2014 ein eigenständiges Fraunhofer-Institut. Das beschloss der Senat der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in seiner Sitzung am 16. Oktober 2013 in Berlin. Bisher war das IVI ein Teilinstitut des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Optronik, Systemtechnik und Bildauswertung IOSB in Karlsruhe.
