With a History as ?The Voice of Cal,? Theater, Dance and Performance Studies Helps Students Master Oral Communication
Have you ever been in the midst of an important conversation or presentation, and suddenly fumbled or froze?
The Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies is helping all students become more poised, confident communicators by offering two courses in Public Speaking during the 2014 Summer Semester. In these courses, students will immerse themselves in the art of oral communication, under the instruction of experienced public speaking instructors Lisa Anne Porter and Sam Haley-Hill.
This new course in public speaking is lauded by Dean of Arts and Humanities Anthony J. Cascardi: ?There is perhaps no more important ability, in any walk of life, than to be able to make clear and persuasive arguments,? he says. ?In my view, TDPS has a very important contribution to make to this effort as the Department draws students to practice of oral commu ...

TDPS presents Philip Kan Gotanda?s After the War Blues from March 7-16
from UC Berkeley Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies
(2014/2/8 3:33)
|
The Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies continues its 2014 Main Stage season with Philip Kan Gotanda?s After the War Blues , running March 7-16 in Zellerbach Playhouse.
War does many things to us ? it can make us question our government, question what it means to be an American, and question where we belong. After the War Blues takes place in the aftermath of World War II, when several communities intersected in San Francisco?s Western Addition District: Japanese-Americans returning from internment camps, African-Americans who had come to San Francisco looking for work, White southern migrants looking for economic opportunity and Russian Jews arriving in this country in the wake of the war. During a time when resources were limited, the characters struggle to get along and find their place in this new cultural mix. Says Gotanda, ?The play asks – how do you begin to bridge all these different communities, and ultimately, can you??

Naomi Bragin
TDPS is pleased to announce that Performance Studies doctoral candidate Naomi Bragin is co-winner of TDR: The Drama Review’s 2013 Student Essay Contest for “Shot and Captured: Turf Dance, YAK Films, and the Oakland, California, R.I.P. Project.” The essay will be published in the journal?s Summer 2014 issue.
Turfing is an improvisation-based hood dance style created in West Oakland, in the early 90?s. ? There are particular ways of moving in turf style, even when it incorporates moves from other hip-hop dance styles,? says Bragin. ?The movements tend to be abstract but they express pain and joy in ways that reflect a larger understanding of blackness and at the same time speak particularly to black life in neighborhoods of Oakland and the Bay Area.?
?The article focuses on YouTube broadcast turf dance memorials created by and for black Oakland youth whose deaths go unreported in mainstream news media,? says Bragin. ?I use th ...
