Lucy Raven’s category-defying work makes use of photography, film, video, animation, sound, and installation to create projects that investigate industrial systems, image production, and how community is created. Some aspects of her practice are akin to investigative journalism, but her methods of research and presentation make use of the modes and tools of Art Practice. Raven is also an art writer and curator, and is currently a Lecturer at the UC Berkeley Department of Art Practice, where she is teaching a video and performance class.

The course examines U.S. ?Women of Color,? also known as ?U.S. Third World women? feminist thought through historic writings, visual, and performance arts. We will learn about women of colors’ lives through their own theories and representations and trace the development of their ground-breaking critique of Eurocentric racist and classist feminist and gay and lesbian movements, and critique of the homophobic heteronormativity of the anti-racist civil rights and cultural nationalism movements. We will see the development and practice of politics of coalition, theories of simultaneity of oppressions and intersectionality, and decolonizing aesthetics in the work of numerous African American, Asian American, Latina, and Native American feminist artists. La Peña Cultural Center presents: Amnesia , a new play about race and immigration written and performed by Ariel Luckey . Layering theater, dance, spoken word and a live score of hip hop, Klezmer, and Mexican folk music, Amnesia tells the story of a young man who retraces his family?s migration from a small village in Eastern Europe through New York?s Lower East Side to Phoenix, Arizona, only to find that the violence his family fled cannot be so easily forgotten.
Amnesia reveals America’s forgotten immigrant roots and investigates the role of race at the border. The play will enjoy a four day run from May 15-May 18 at La Peña in Berkeley. On Thursday-Saturday, May 15-17, the show will begin at 8 pm, and on Sunday, May 18, it begins at 7 pm. The San Francisco Neo-futurists is an experimental theater company with roots in the Chicago and New York theater scenes. Since December 2013, they’ve brought their weekly show, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind (30 plays in 60 minutes) to audiences in the Boxcar Playhouse, 505 Natoma @ 6th St in San Francisco.

ReOrient Festival Submissions Deadline Extended to May 1, 2014
The ReOrient Festival of Short Plays was inaugurated in 1999 to present alternative perspectives of the Middle East, showcasing the diversity of artistic voices and styles from the region, and gathering various segments of the community together for an evening of distinctive–yet shared–narratives.
Eligibility
Plays by playwrights of Middle Eastern heritage writing about any topic
Playwrights of all backgrounds writing about the Middle East
Plays must be written in English
10-30 minutes long
Thematic Areas of Interest
Comedies of all sorts, particularly political satire
Adaptations of classical texts and/or historical figures
Exploration of Middle Eastern performance traditions
Experiments with non-realistic forms
