Dr. Nejat received her Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Toronto in Toronto , Canada . She is currently the director of the Robotics I Laboratory and founder of the Autonomous Systems Group at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. In addition, she is a faculty advisor for the Stony Brook Robot Design Team. Her current research areas include autonomous systems, robotics and mechatronics.

Current research focuses on children’s understanding of intelligent technologies, particularly robots. Developmental psychologists often talk about robots as a test case for understanding young children’s theories of biology and life. One segment of my research is looking at this issue – how do young children decide whether a robot is alive or not, and what other characteristics do they attribute to robots if they believe they are alive.
