Abstract:
This paper addresses the topic of socially assistive robotics – robots that assist people through social interaction. We posit that socially assistive robotics (SAR) presents a new niche of key importance for the future. SAR has the potential to enhance the quality of life for large populations of users, including those in the process of convalescence, rehabilitation, ageing, and living with disabilities. We present our SAR work aimed toward enabling intelligent robots to provide individualized and adaptive monitoring, coaching, training, encouragement, and aid to people with a variety of needs, through social interaction and without the use of physical contact.
